"The delusion of the ‘white liberal’ is superiority of another kind - not of origin, or of status, but of the spirit. He takes pride in the fact that he is free from prejudice… For the liberal it is a matter of self-respect to be considered free of bias. Yet when brought to the test by the stark and seemingly extreme demands of Negroes, this confidence often gives way to a resentment and anger at the Negro, an anger accompanied by guilt…"
-Kenneth Clark, The Dark Ghetto: Dilemmas of Social Power, 1965
i laughed at the quote but
i had to read this book for class and idk it was painful in a way bc the author seemed almost hopeful about the future of Harlem and other black ghettos in us cities but then things just got worse (putting a shitton of black people in jail was a response to the ghetto and what was seen as ~~~corruption apparently)
and then we were all just sitting in a circle discussing it but it all felt so desperate, somehow, like we were all just speaking for the sake of speaking and none of us really knew what we were saying, parroting quotes from the book and we were just observing all of this from the outside (granted, i have no idea what everyone’s backgrounds or histories are but it felt so… sterile??)
clark makes a really good case for education as the starting point of equality in races and there’s a section on how students in ghetto schools do poorly because their teachers expect them to do poorly; when they were taught in classrooms where their teachers were actually trained to care about them and have high expectations of them, the students actually performed a lot better and it seems so simple but…….??????!?!?!?!?
one of the biggest disappointments of november ngl was when ararat invited me to his fb event for the “olives and palestine” table with free food and knowledge!! what more could you want!!! but i went and tHE TABLE WASNT’ THERE
